Development

Film Development;  22.47 seconds; needs development through narrative. Perhaps more diverse shots of makeup application.  Need's more of a narrative; p erhaps a narrative focused on a breakup, or the development of emotions within a breakup. Third shot is cut too quick; needs a shot between two and three to aid transitioning of shots.  Fourth, and dancing shots, are too early. Needs slower paced shots, perhaps with a larger frame to avoid a claustrophobic feel to the film.  Multiple shots to be intwined between third and fourth shot.  Need to aid narrative; additional establishing shots of character, placing record onto turntable? fumbling through a bag? Potential title; Haploid. Jefferson Airplane - Today; played during introduction. April Come She Will Scarborough Fair. Progress to walking scenes of contemplation; outside shots around park. Influenced by 'The Graduate'.  Following shot of protagonist walking; single take shot, from side, of walking. Incl
Evaluation Brief; the development of a single character.

Film

Film to based upon the music of Axis: Bold As Love (Hendrix); lyrics shall inspire the films direction, however shall avoid the conventions of a musical. The film shall feature two or three songs to avoid being overly long.  Opening sequence; over the shoulder shot into mirror, shooting reflection of the protagonist. Contrasting light, deep dark tones against bright, highlighted tones. Change film speed? and cut to close-up shots of protagonist.  Well she's walking through the clouds With a circus mind that's running round Butterflies and zebras And moonbeams and fairy tales That's all she ever thinks about Riding with the wind. When I'm sad, she comes to me With a thousand smiles, she gives to me free It's alright she says it's alright Take anything you want from me, Anything. Fly on little wing, Yeah yeah, yeah, little wing Shot of protagonist against white wall, alternatively a studio canvas, with projected film across her; the film pr

Film Ideas (Developed)

Opening Scene - Protagonist applying make-up in the mirror; shots influenced by Warhol's Screen Test, incorporating deep lighting with high contrast. Over the shoulder shot, filming profile in the mirror. Music to be played in the background, potentially diegetic to create a realism within the scene. Extreme close-up shot of the protagonist applying eye make-up; focus on the prominent, dark eye liner, which contrasts to the pale skin and deep, shadowing light. I intend to create an experimental film through the use of cinematography; this means i do not require a narrative, however i shall incorporate a minor storyline to immerse the audience. This could be a short narrative about the protagonist discovering herself, created through a series of visuals which influence her character. On the other hand, i could reveal the protagonist to the audience through a series of visuals. I intend to shoot the film entirely in black and white, both for aesthetic effect and influence period

Short Film Influences

Meshes Of The Afternoon (1943) Influenced by the films aesthetic; the film uses deep, opposing lighting to create shadows, which hide the protagonists identity. The use of camera angles and close ups also interests me, giving the film surrealist qualities. Marie Menken - Lights  (1966) Influential for an experimental opening scene; luminous, flourescent colours. Static, ambient noise in the background. Switches focus between lights. Film changes speed; infers changes in perspective. Could potentially be used to suggest a drug scene, hallucinogenic visuals. Len Lye - Rainbow Dance (1936), Kaleidoscope (1935) Influentual through the use of dramatic colour changes and contrasts between silhouette colouring and background colouring. Creates an energetic movement through the frame, with dancing shapes and movements of bold, contrasting colours. Andy Warhol - Screen Tests (1964-66) Warhol films close up shots of his subjects, who complete minor movements such as turning their

Initial Coursework Ideas

I know not yet whether to complete a script or short film; i possess ideas for both formats, however have a fond image for what a short film may feature. I intend, if i choose to complete a film, to create a short, artistic film featuring popular music as a basis. The film is to be set around 1966, the music set to be period correct. I envision an opening scene of a girl, the protagonist perhaps, applying makeup in a mirror; the shot would frame over her shoulder, and shoot her reflection in an intimate, sensual lighting. Playing behind her, as diegetic music from a record player, a love song, perhaps The Beatles or a girl group from the period. The scene intends to introduce the character through intimate, extreme close-up shots, revealing her appearance and movements as the music encourages her. Script ideas include a narrative of a famous story or character, adapted by myself to form a narrative script. The influence of this came from the 2019 production 'The King', a pe
