Crimson Peak

Crimson Peak

The scene begins with a close up shot of the protagonists face. This draws attention to her facial expression, showing pain, which intrigues the viewer as to why. The scene is shot at neutral angle, framing her face centrally. The lighting, which is low key, reveals little of the room where the protagonist is situated, this creating tension and worry for the audience.
The camera then rises from low angle to neutral angle. This reveals a wide shot of the room, and goes into a close up of the protagonists face. The lighting is generated from a candle, making it low key. This leaves the audience wondering what lurks in the shadows, creating suspense.
Mise en scene includes period features, such as deteriorating curtains, unwashed bedsheets and candle light. This reveals the time period, and creates an atmosphere like that of a horror convention.

The camera follows the protagonist down the hallway, into enclosed space. This makes the audience nervous. The neutral camera angle emphasises the protagonists fear, and the sound of her heavy breathing generates suspense within the audience.
The camera exits the hallway and pans to the right of the protagonist, revealing the setting. The scene features period wooden banisters and peeling wallpaper, exaggerating the tense atmosphere and incorporating classic gothic horror conventions. The camera begins to surround her, and follows her nervous movements. This emphasises her confusion. The white of the protagonists dress is lit by the candles light. This stands out against the poorly lit background.

The camera follows the protagonist once again, at neutral angle. The focus is placed on the candle light and the back of her head, leaving the background in shadow. The shallow depth of field also emphasis focus on the character, and leaves the background and her destination in question to the audience. The diegetic sound is faint, with creaking of the floorboards and the silent hiss of flame from the candle. The sound also incorporates barking of a dog, which is of her intention to find. This constant sound creates tension as the protagonist moves closer towards it.
A shock comes when the character hears scratching behind a closed door. The protagonist speaks dialogue for the first time in the scene, calling for the dog. The door is opened, however the dog is seen at the end of the hallway. The dog is revealed at low angle, with the camera alongside it. This leaves the protagonist looking far away and alone, which nerves the audience.
The scene then moves to a close up shot, revealing a confused, nervous expression. The camera pans out once again, revealing a monster behind the door. A thud sound startles the audience, and the door is slammed shut by the monster.
The door is then ecstatically swung open by the nervous protagonist, revealing nothing. The camera shoots from inside the room, showing the terrified stance of the character.

The camera transitions to a long shot of the hallway following the relief scare. This features both the dog and the protagonist. The scene is well lit, with natural light coming from a window in the hallway. This relieves the audience as any monsters, like previously seen, are easily visible.
The camera then cuts to an extreme close up of the protagonist following her closing the door after inspecting the room. The close up shot is at neutral angle, allowing the audience to clearly see the facial expression and relate to the emotion shown.
The peaceful relief for the audience is shattered by a loud, distressing scream from a monster which rises from the floor. The camera pans left from the protagonist, and zooms in on the monster using a dolly shot. The lighting makes the monster a silhouette, building fear as it can not be clearly seen. This uses the fear of the unknown to frighten the audience. The distressing screams from the monster continue as it crawls down the hallway toward the character.
The sequence transitions to a shot behind the monster, before cutting to a close up of its face. In this CGI is used to model the monsters face, creating a ghoulish corpse with emotive expression.

The protagonist is shot running down the hallway. The camera is positioned close up to the characters face, however the scene is shot at a tilted angle, meaning the monster in the hall is featured. This off centre camera angle causes the audience to feel uncomfortable, and creates a dynamic view of the full scene.
The camera pans and follows the protagonist into a lift. The lift is dull, with worn paint and heavy dust. This adds to the context and creates an uneasy view of the old house. The camera shoots a close up of the character, then pans upwards to a high angle shot of the lift going downwards. Noises of the creaky lift can be heard as the camera follows its movements.

The next sequence begins in what we believe is the cellar. The camera shoots a shot of the lift as it comes into view, then pans backwards to create a long shot. This shows the setting in which the protagonist now finds herself in. The backwards pan also reduces the size of the character as it pans away, making the audience view her as small and potentially vulnerable.
The sequence then transitions to a close up, with the characters face lit by candle light once again. It then skips to a long shot of the cellar, revealing its contents. This again makes the protagonist small against the vast cellar. Diegetic sounds of dripping are heard, implying a damp and cold setting.
The scene is lit by natural light cascading from the ceiling. This creates areas of light, however areas of deep shadow.
The scene cuts to a close up of the protagonist looking out into the cellar. The shot changes from the character in focus, to the cellar in focus as she moves away. This gives a clear view of the mise en scene. The camera then shows a close up of a box, with initials of E.S. upon it. The protagonist passes infront of the camera shot, disrupting the view of the box. The scene then cuts to a low angle, close up of the protagonist inspecting the box. The clip then ends. The characters facial expression creates a mysterious atmosphere, and leaves the audience questioning what lies within the box.
